Stem cell therapy. Old challenges and new solutions

2020

Stem cell therapy (SCT), born as therapeutic revolution to replace pharmacological treatments, remains a hope and not yet an effective solution. Accordingly, stem cells cannot be conceivable as a "canonical" drug, because of their unique biological properties. A new reorientation in this field is emerging, based on a better understanding of stem cell biology and use of cutting-edge technologies and innovative disciplines. This will permit to solve the gaps, failures, and long-term needs, such as the retention, survival and integration of stem cells, by employing pharmacology, genetic manipulation, biological or material incorporation. Consequently, the clinical applicability of SCT for chro…

An Experimental Investigation on the Air Permeability of Passive Ventilation Grilles

2015

Abstract The need of increasing both energy saving and acoustic insulation has leaded to the design of lowest air permeability frames resulting in the worsening of indoor air quality. Moreover, sometime in several civil-use existing buildings (i.e. schools or houses, historical buildings) mechanical ventilation systems cannot be installed due to non-removable constraints. In these cases, passive ventilation grilles are a cheap and effective solution for the ventilation. This work deals with an in-depth experimental analysis about the air permeability values measured over a set of passive ventilation grilles available on the market. Obtained results often showed performances very far to thos…

SMS disaster alert system programming

2008

Floods are natural phenomena that profoundly affect the development of human society, as they are the most widespread disasters in the world and they cause the greatest property and human loss. The flood warning system presented in this paper provides a reliable and effective solution, which is complementary to existing traditional warning systems; it employs information and communication technology and specialized devices.

Oral drug therapy following bariatric surgery: an overview of fundamentals, literature and clinical recommendations

2016

Bariatric surgery is the most effective solution for severe obesity and obesity with comorbidities, and the number of patients going through bariatric surgery is rapidly and constantly growing. The modified gastrointestinal anatomy of the patient may lead to significant pharmacokinetic alterations in the oral absorption of drugs after the surgery; however, because of insufficient available literature and inadequate awareness of the medical team, bariatric surgery patients may be discharged from the hospital with insufficient instructions regarding their medication therapy. In this article, we aim to present the various mechanisms by which bariatric surgery may influence oral drug absorption…

Different Type Clay Amendments for Lead Immobilization in Contaminated Soils

2014

Contamination with lead in soil is a crucial problem in industrial and military sites. Immobilization of lead by natural and modified clay as soil amendment can be an effective solution to this problem. Quaternary and Devonian clays were chosen for modification with NaCl, CaCl2, FeOOH and Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2 in different proportions of Ca/P equimolar ratio to test and compare immobilization efficiency of lead (II) on raw and modified clays by using a batch leaching test. The aim of the study is to compare different types of raw and modified clays as soil amendments by lead immobilization properties.

When are international managers a cost effective solution? The rationale of transaction cost economics applied to staffing decisions in MNCs

2005

Abstract A common claim in the literature of expatriation is the one referring to the high costs of expatriation. In this paper, on the basis of transaction cost economics (TCE), we show how limited this approach is. In particular, we consider a set of costs that, although ignored in traditional expatriation literature, must be accounted for when a MNC is deciding on whether to recruit expatriates or local managers in its subsidiaries. These costs include selection, training, and performance evaluation costs. We also formulate a series of hypotheses around the situations in which the total costs of recruiting expatriates are lower than those generated by local managers. We then test these h…
